Investigators say Sunderland was arrested while drinking with juveniles outside a vacant home and allegedly charged a deputy.
He's accused of resisting arrest, unlawful entry and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Sunderland calls Thursday's incident "a misunderstanding."
Sunderland was the first person under the age of 18 to sail solo around the world. His record was surpassed by another young sailor from the United Kingdom.
