Doctor: Smith given meds even after detox

LOS ANGELES /*Dr. Nathalie Maullin*/, a psychiatrist at /*Cedars-Sinai Medical Center*/ when Smith was hospitalized for drug withdrawal during her pregnancy, is a prosecution witness.

On Monday, Maullin told the downtown Los Angeles courtroom that she had weaned Smith off powerful anti-anxiety medications when she was pregnant. But that didn't last long, according to Maullin. The doctor told the court that the day Smith left the hospital, defendant /*Dr. Sandeep Kapoor*/ wrote her new prescriptions for the very medications she had just discontinued.

Kapoor, along with /*Dr. Kristine Eroshevich*/ and Smith's lawyer boyfriend /*Howard K. Stern*/ are charged with providing drugs to Smith. They have pleaded not guilty.

Maullin also had to face cross-examination Monday. Stern's attorney accused her of weaning Smith off the anti-anxiety medications too quickly. Maullin acknowledged telling Stern that the detox may have been too aggressive and could lead to side effects.

The Playboy model died of a drug overdose in Florida in 2007.
