Car-to-minivan shooting kills father of 2

DOWNEY, Calif. Downey police responded to a report of a shooting on the 105 Freeway in Friday night.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. Friday, a shooting occurred between a blue 2002 Honda Accord with chrome rims and tinted windows and a minivan.

A suspect in the Accord allegedly shot into the minivan, striking the driver. Words were reportedly exchanged before the shooting, according to investigators.

A 28-year-old man was driving the minivan with his wife and two children in the vehicle. They merged on the eastbound 105 Freeway from the Lakewood on-ramp.

The incident between the two vehicles occurred on the 105 at Bellflower Ave.

The gunfire struck the driver of the minivan. He managed to pull the minivan over. He got out of his van and collapsed on the ground near the rear of the vehicle.

Medical personnel arrived on scene and transported the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Downey Police investigators closed the eastbound 105 Freeway for about two hours while they investigated.

"It's a very common car, a Honda Accord. We're hoping somebody actually saw something to give us something more to go on. Right now we're looking into every avenue we can at this point," said Lt. Phil Rego of the Downey Police Department.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call Downey police at (562) 904-2308.
