Compton replaces city manager

COMPTON, Calif. City Council members declined to comment on the firing, except to say it was time for the city to go in a "new direction." The vote to fire Evans was unanimous.

Evans' dismissal followed a marathon council meeting Tuesday night. There was a 5-hour public meeting and an hour-and-a-half meeting behind closed doors which went past midnight.

City Controller Willie Norfleet was named as temporary city manager.

Evans took the job in 2007 after the firing of previous City Manager Barbara Kilroy.
