The attorney for Andrew Gallo, 23, argued the publicity surrounding the case has tainted the jury pool.
Jury selection is already under way.
Authorities said Gallo had a blood-alcohol level almost three times the legal limit when he ran a red light and crashed into the car carrying the three victims.
Gallo is charged with three counts of second-degree murder.
He has pleaded not guilty.
