Mattingly to replace Torre as Dodgers manager

LOS ANGELES Mattingly will be the Dodgers' fourth manager in eight seasons since /*Frank McCourt*/ bought the team in February 2004 and the ninth manager in Dodger history.

"His work ethic is unparalleled, his baseball knowledge is vast and his leadership skills have been established during more than three decades in professional baseball," said Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti in a statement.

Mattingly was in his third season as the Dodgers hitting coach.

Torre became manager of the Dodgers for the 2008 season following 12 years and four World Series titles with the New York Yankees, but he was not able to match that success in Los Angeles.

Torre turned 70 in July and has won 2,318 games in 29 major league seasons as a manager. His career also has included stints with the Mets, Atlanta and St. Louis.
