High pollution spurs Malibu septic tank ban

September 22, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
The California Water Board voted unanimously on Tuesday to ban septic tanks and to install a central sewer system in Malibu.New tanks were banned immediately.

Businesses must stop using septic tanks by 2015 and homeowners by 2019.

The move was spurred by chronic pollution in Malibu Creek and Lagoon and Surfrider Beach.

However, some Malibu residents fear a sewer line will inspire a land rush.

The changes are expected to take about nine years.
