Driver sentenced in fatal O.C. hit-and-run

SANTA ANA, Calif. Investigators say in the early morning hours of July 19, 2008, 27-year-old Eduardo Orozcoaguilera was speeding eastbound on State Route 22. They say the Anaheim resident was driving erratically, swerving in and out of lanes, and crashed into the left rear of a Toyota.

The driver of the Toyota lost control and flipped over on the freeway. Muktar Bagum, 64, the front passenger in the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and three children survived.

Orozcoaguilera also lost control of his car and crashed into a concrete wall. Prosecutors say he abandoned the car and fled on foot.

Later in the morning he contacted authorities and confessed to being the driver from the crash.

This past July, Orozcoaguilera pleaded guilty to one felony count of vehicular manslaughter by unlawful manner of driving and with gross negligence, one felony count of hit and run with injury, and a sentencing enhancement for fleeing the scene of the crime.
