Child deaths by abuse, neglect rise in L.A.

LOS ANGELES The release by the /*Department of Children and Family Services*/ is now required under state law.

"The value of this transparency of making this information public is that we can hopefully not repeat the circumstances that caused the death of the child in the first place," Los Angeles County Supervisor /*Zev Yaroslaysky*/ said. "Learn from what happened and try to avoid this kind of problem in the future."

According to documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times, the number of children dying of abuse or neglect in Los Angeles County has been on the rise from 18 in 2008, to 26 in 2009, to 21 cases in the first eight months of 2010.

The DCSF had been involved in all of those cases.
