New Calif. smog checks to be faster, cheaper

LOS ANGELES Under the new rules, a car's onboard computer will be used to calculate emission instead of using a sensor placed in a car's tailpipe.

Officials said the new process will be better on the environment.

"(It will remove) 70 tons of pollutants a day, which is equal to taking 800,000 cars off the road every day," Assm. Michael Eng (D-El Monte) said.

The current system averages $48 for a smog check. Officials said the new test can be done for half the price in half the time.
