Leftover Halloween candy: Keep or toss?

November 1, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
Food safety experts are warning parents to keep an eye on leftover Halloween candy and be aware of expiration dates.Experts say the candy has a limited shelf life and can go bad, especially the chocolate.

The shelf life can be between two weeks to a year, depending on the candy.

Experts say the softer the candy, the shorter the shelf life.

Hard candies may last indefinitely, but people have suffered from salmonella poisoning from eating expired chocolate.
