Three pounds of 6-year-old Kyla Plank's Halloween candy means $3 for her to go shopping.
Kyla and her younger sister, Kinsey, arrived Monday at Irvine Children's Dentistry for a checkup.
The Orange County office is offering the Halloween candy buy-back program this week.
"We weigh the candy they bring in and they get a dollar per pound, up to five pounds," said Nancy Garcia, an office manager at Irvine Children's Dentistry.
"Candy causes dental decay and we know how bad candy can be for cavaties," said Dr. Anna Chand.
But they say it's not just about preventing cavities. The donated candy will also bring a smile to others.
All of the candy collected after this Friday will go to Operation Gratitude. It will then make its way over to troops overseas.
Last year across the country, the program shipped 60 tons of candy in care packages.
The children who donate also write a letter to troops.
The kids who donate get a goody bag in addition to the cash, as well as an early lesson on giving back to others.
