Paramedics were called to Craig Regional Park to treat students who were at the park for a cross-country meet. Five students were treated for heat-related illnesses, and three were taken to a hospital.
It was hot all around the Southland. The 100 degree temperature in Long Beach broke a record that was set nearly 30 years ago.
People were trying to find ways to cool off in downtown Los Angeles, where the mercury reached 97 degrees. The previous record of 96 degrees was set more than a century ago in 1900.
Anyone planning to exercise outdoors on Thursday was warned to take necessary precautions, because temperatures will be high again.
The fall-like weather is expected to return by the weekend.
