Kanye West says he would "accept" an apology from Matt Lauer and "The Today Show" in advance and has canceled a scheduled November 26 performance on the show following an interview with the host that the rapper called "very brutal".
During the segment, which aired on Thursday, West became angry when a clip of his ambush of Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards was played in the background.
"Yo, how am I supposed to talk if you're going to run the thing in the middle while I'm talking?" West said. "I hear it when I'm trying to talk. Please don't let that happen again. It's ridiculous."
Lauer said airing related videos is a common practice during interviews, adding: "There was nothing improper about it, nothing unusual what so ever."
West said on his Twitter page late on Thursday that he would not perform on "The Today Show" "for obvious reasons."
"I'm so happy the world got to see just a small piece of "the set up"," he said. "I don't hate Matt Lauer... We don't promote hate. That's the whole point!!! I promote love and truth! All positive energy ... all smiles. Much love to Matt and the whole Today Show. I accept ya'll future apology in advance LOL!"
During his interview with Lauer, West was also questioned about his remarks towards then-President George. W. Bush during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, in which the rapper accused him of being racist.
"I didn't need you guys to show me the tape in order to prompt my emotions or whatever," West said. "I came up here because I wanted to say something to him right after the fact. You don't have to do the TV stuff with me. This is reality. I don't need all the jazz. I would tell George Bush in my moment of frustration that I didn't have the grounds to call him a racist."
West said on his Twitter page that Lauer "TRIED TO FORCE MY ANSWERS," adding: "IT WAS VERY BRUTAL AND I CAME THERE WITH ONLY POSITIVE INTENT. I feel very alone very used very tortured very forced very misunderstood very hollow very very misused. I can't be everybody's hero and villain savior and sinner Christian and anti Christ!"
