SAN BRUNO, Calif. --
A California lawmaker is urging the California Public Utilities Commission to immediately hire more gas pipeline inspectors. The move comes after the San Bruno natural gas explosion in September which killed eight people. The commission has nine inspectors, but has conceded it needs four more.
State Sen. Alex Padilla of Los Angeles sent a letter to the commission saying it should hire the four inspectors now.
The agency says only 1 percent of the 110,000 miles of gas pipelines are inspected.
