Santa Ana man convicted in toddler's assault

SANTA ANA, Calif. Alberto Guzman, 30, was convicted of one felony count each of assault on a child with force likely to produce great bodily injury resulting in death, corporal injury on a child, and child abuse. Guzman was acquitted of a murder charge.

Gabriela Morales, 28, faces murder, assault and child abuse charges for the death of her 4-year-old son. Guzman was convicted for taking part in the child's abuse.

The /*Orange County District Attorney*/ charges that Guzman abused the boy by repeatedly striking the boy on April 30, 2008.

The district attorney alleges that on May 30, 2008, Morales assaulted her son to the point of unconsciousness. The D.A. says Morales waited several hours before calling 911.

The boy was transported to Children's Hospital Orange County, where he was pronounced dead from blunt-force trauma to the head.

The boy's older brother, 9, testified in Guzman's trial that the defendant had repeatedly struck the 4-year-old with his hands and a belt. The D.A. alleges Guzman and Morales abused the boy by withholding food and forcing him to sleep on the floor.

Morales has a hearing scheduled for Jan. 21, 2011.

Guzman is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 14, 2011 in Santa Ana. He faces a maximum sentence of 34 years to life in state prison.
