Mommie Helen's popular pies worth waiting for

COLTON, Calif. For many, Thanksgiving isn't complete without a pie from Mommie Helen's Bakery in Colton, and customers started lining up early Wednesday to get their slice of holiday heaven.

"We found it online and saw the reviews from Shaq and everybody and came over a couple month ago and here we are back for Thanksgiving," said patient customer Anne Tomlin.

Each holiday the confections attract big crowds. Last year owner Dorothy Rose even hired bouncers to keep customers from fighting over her pies.

To prevent the scalping that occurred last year in the parking lot Rose said she prepared an extra 2500 sweet potato pies. While there are plenty of different pies to choose from - apple, pecan and pumpkin - customers overwhelming order the sweet potato pie.

"This is so reminiscent of my grandmother's pies. The sweet potato and peach cobbler are the best I've ever had, seriously," said Wille Bell.

The secret ot the success of Mommie Helen's Bakery is in the ingredients. The recipes are ones Rose's own mother Helen passed down to her.

"You always use the best products. We use the best sugar, flour and we can't worry about the price, just use the best," she said.

That, she says, is what makes her pies worth waiting for.
