3 arrested for smuggling people across border

Two men and a women suspected of smuggling people from Mexico into California are behind bars.Anthony Prewitt, 25, of Chula Vista and Andrea Schmidig, 24, or Reno, Nev. were arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment and conspiracy, according to Santa Ana police.

Jesus Rubio, 28, of Tijuana was arrested on an immigration hold on a warrant for crossing the border illegally.

The three were arrested at a home in the 2900 block of South Bradford Street around 8:30 a.m. after they demanded money from a resident in exchange for releasing two Mexicans.

The two Mexican nationals were taken to the Santa Ana Police Department for questioning, but it was not known if they were turned over to federal hands for deportation.
