Activists protest puppy mills in West L.A.

WEST LOS ANGELES They demonstrated outside the Westside Pavilion Mall.

The group claims many of the puppies purchased in pet stores and over the Internet come from large-scale puppy breeding operations that produce malnourished and often sickly animals.

"On the biggest shopping day of the year, we're out just saying do not buy dogs from pet stores or over the Internet, because those dogs come directly from puppy mills," said Jennifer Peterson, an animal rights activist.

"If you buy a dog from a pet store or over the Internet, you're just fueling this barbaric industry," Peterson added.

The demonstrators claim that over 50 percent of pet store puppies are bought during the holidays.
