Motive still mystery in Covina SUV shooting

COVINA, Calif. Authorities said the shooting took place around 12:40 a.m. on the 1200 block of West San Bernardino Road.

The victim, who was driving a black 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe, was transported to a hospital in critical condition. His identity was not released but police described him as a 53-year-old Hispanic man.

Area neighbors say they did not see the shooting occur but heard a number of gunshots.

"It sounded like firecrackers almost," described neighbor Bill Barker. "I heard about five shots - two quick and then three or four after."

Police do not know the motive for the shooting and say the victim doesn't appear to have gang ties. Investigators said surveillance footage from nearby cameras may give them a clue to what prompted the attack.
