OTRC: Ed O'Neill says Jane Lynch did not deserve Emmy for 'Glee'

Ed O'Neill appears in a scene from the ABC sitcom 'Modern Family'.

Ed O'Neill, who stars in the ABC sitcom "Modern Family" but may be better known as the misanthropic shoe salesman on the 1990s comedy series "Married With Children", says Jane Lynch should not have won an Emmy for her role on "Glee".

Lynch, 50, plays the cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, whose put-downs of students and teachers on FOX's musical sitcom are arguably as nasty as the ones O'Neill's character, Al Bundy, uttered to everyone on his show - from overweight women to his own family.

Lynch won the Emmy Award for "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series" for her role earlier this year.

"I love Jane, honestly I do. I'm dying to star in one of Christopher Guest's movies alongside her, but I don't think she should have gotten the Emmy for that part," O'Neill told TV Guide Canada, adding that Sylvester is "just a one-note character."

O'Neill praised his "Modern Family" co-star, Sofia Vergara, who plays his Colombian wife Gloria and who was nominated for "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series" alongside Lynch.

"I don't think people realize how hilarious she is," O'Neill said. "She's so sharp with her wit, it's amazing."

Others nominated in the category were "Modern Family" actress Julie Bowen, Kristen Wiig of "Saturday Night Live", "30 Rock" star Jane Krakowski and "Two And A Half Men" actress Holland Taylor.

"Glee" began airing in 2009 and depicts the lives of high school misfits and popular students in a glee club that Sylvester continuously tries to bring down as part of a bid to score more funding for her cheerleading squad. The show has won four Emmy Awards.

Lynch's prize marked her sole individual Emmy win and second nomination. She has starred in several films directed by Guest, including "Best in Show" in 2000 and "For Your Consideration" in 2006.

O'Neill, 64, has never been nominated for an individual Emmy but received two Golden Globe nods for his role on "Married With Children", which ran between 1987 and 1997. The show also starred Katey Sagal and David Faustino and helped launch the film career of Christina Applegate, who played Bundy's promiscuous daughter. The series was nominated for seven Emmys and won none of them.

O'Neill plays Jay Pritchett, the patriarch of a quirky extended family on "Modern Family", which won six Emmys, including "Outstanding Comedy Series".
