Aretha Franklin may leave hospital this week

DETROIT Franklin's cousin, Brenda Corbett, tells the Detroit Free Press that the legendary soul singer "has a long life in front of her" and expects to be back on stage in late spring or early summer.

The 68-year-old Franklin announced last week that she had undergone a surgical procedure, although it was not released what she was having surgery for.

Last month, Franklin canceled all concert dates and personal appearances through May on orders from her doctors.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson said Wednesday that he has visited with Franklin four or five times recently and she is "recovering very well" from surgery. He said Franklin takes daily walks up and down the hall of her hospital, and her spirits "are high and her faith is strong."
