Audit: Housing Dept. behind in inspections

LOS ANGELES That's just one of the findings of L.A. City Controller /*Wendy Greuel*/'s audit of Housing Department records released Tuesday.

It also shows that the department has failed to collect $48 million owed for inspections.

Greuel says the housing department is now working to make sure the inspections can be carried out promptly to protect city residents.

"The Housing Department does a very good job helping to build housing, they're not good at collecting money," she said. "While the city will never achieve a 100 percent collection rate, city departments must do a better job of sending these delinquent accounts to agencies more equipped to collect the outstanding funds."

Greuel says some city employees who were going to be laid off are transferring to the Housing Department to fill the open positions.
