Ryan Reynolds has filed for divorce from Scarlett Johansson, following last week's announcement that the two had decided to end their 2-year marriage.

Johansson, a 26-year-old New York native who starred in "Lost in Translation" and "Iron Man 2", and Reynolds, a 34-year-old Canadian actor who can be seen next year in "Green Lantern," wed on Sept. 27, 2008 in Canada after dating for about a year. They have no children.

Reynolds cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, according to the legal papers, which were filed on Thursday. Johansson has already filed her divorce response and the two listed December 14 as the date of their separation.

It was announced last week that Johansson and Ryan Reynolds had split.

"After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage," Reynolds' spokesperson had quoted the actor as saying. "We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."

Reynolds was named "Sexiest man Alive" of 2010 by People magazine in November while Johansson was voted "Babe of the Year" by GQ magazine.

Reynolds began his career in Canada, starring in locally-produced television shows. He rose to fame in the United States with a main part in the sitcom "Two Guys and a Girl" from 1998 to 2001 and later nabbed the title role in the raunchy comedy movie "Van Wilder", which starred Tara Reid.

In "Green Lantern," which hits theaters on June 17, 2011 and is based on the DC comic book, Reynolds plays a superhero who uses a power ring that concerts his ideas and willpower into energy as he tries to fight evil.

Johansson is set to reprise her"Iron Man 2" role as the Black Widow and her alter-ego Natasha Romanoff in the spinoff film "The Avengers," set for release on May 4, 2012.
