2 teens dead in Redlands apartment shooting

REDLANDS, Calif. Many people said the victims were good kids and good students. One victim was on the football team at school, others on the basketball team.

"I have a hole in my heart. I don't have my lovely big boy anymore, I can't hear him say, 'Hey Ma' when he comes in the door. I'm not going to get that," said Shanita Williams, mother of 17-year-old Quinn McCaleb.

Authorities received 911 calls about shots fired in a common area of an apartment complex on Oxford Drive near Post Street at about 7 p.m. Officers found four shooting victims.

"I just know that when I got here, my baby was laying under a tree, and that is the most horrible thing that any mother or father should have to deal with," Williams said.

McCaleb was declared dead at the scene, and another teen, identified as 16-year-old Andrew Jackson of Redlands, was declared dead at a local hospital. Two other teens remain hospitalized at /*Loma Linda University Medical Center*/ and were expected to survive. A fifth teen who was in their group was able to escape unharmed.

According to Carl Baker of the Redlands Police Department, the shooting victims had run in different directions when the shots were fired.

"So what we have are multiple areas where the victims were either contacted or located," Baker said.

An official motive for the shooting has not been determined, but police say the incident may have started as an argument between two groups of kids.

Danny Schubert said he saw four or five black kids walk one way, and then a group of Hispanic kids nearby. They started talking, and then shots were fired, Schubert said.

No suspect description was available.

Anyone with information related to the incident was urged to call the Redlands Police Department at (909) 798-7681.
