LA company recalls cheese over bacteria fears

LOS ANGELES Surtex Foods is recalling its Oaxaca String Cheese "La Original" because it may be contaminated with bacteria.

The cheese comes in a clear 17.63-ounce package and may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes and staphylococcus aureus.

No illnesses have been reported.

The company is looking into what caused the possible contamination.

Listeria infections can kill young children and sick and elderly people. They can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

The cheese was sold in California through retail stores and distributors, with an expiration date of 01/09/2011.
