Celebrities, like Robert Downey Jr., weren't the only ones who were offended by some of Ricky Gervais' snarky quips at the Golden Globes on Sunday.

Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Philip Berk tells The Hollywood Reporter that he thinks the comedian "definitely crossed the line."

"Some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that's Ricky," he told the industry paper. "Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones."

The Hollywood Foreign Press is the organization responsible for putting together the Golden Globes each year.

Berk says, "I had absolutely no idea what Ricky was going to say so anything I heard was at the same time you heard it." He added, "When you hire Ricky Gervais, you expect the unexpected."

During the show, Gervais introduced Downey Jr. by giving a list of his recent successful film credits before ending with, "But many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail."

Robert Downey Jr. didn't take kindly to Gervais' joke. "Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say the vibe of the show has been pretty good so far, wouldn't you?"

When "Toy Story 3" costars Tom Hanks and Tim Allen presented, Hanks said, "We recall when Ricky Gervais was a slightly chubby but very kind comedian," and Allen responded, "Neither of which he is now."

According to a KABC TV SurveyUSA poll, 32 percent of Golden Globes viewers rated Ricky Gervais as an excellent host, 28 percent as good, 22 percent as fair and only 17 percent rated him as poor. The rest were "not sure."
