Mel Gibson may be charged with domestic violence regarding a January 2010 confrontation with then-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of their baby daughter Lucia.
His attorneys recently met with Los Angeles prosecutors, while the county sheriff's department in October wrapped up an investigation of a claim that the 55-year-old actor punched Grigorieva, a 40-year-old Russian musician, in the face during the incident, People magazine reported.
Authorities are still looking into whether she extorted money from Gibson, the magazine said. No arrests have been made.
The actor and Grigorieva broke up in April 2010. Gibson has said in court documents filed the following June that he slapped Grigorieva during the confrontation at his Los Angeles home in a bid to protect their baby, who she was holding in her arms at the time.
He has denied her claims that he punched her in the face and harmed Lucia as they argued in front of her 13-year-old son Sacha, whose father is actor Timothy Dalton.
Gibson made headlines last summer due to a recorded racist, sexist and explicit rant he is said to have made against Grigorieva. He has not confirmed it is his voice on the recordings, which were posted on the website RadarOnline.
Grigorieva said on CNN talk show "Larry King Live" in November that she was willing to forgive Gibson as the two continue a bitter custody battle over Lucia.
Grigorieva also recalled happier times with Gibson, saying he used to carry her around in his arms and call her his "little Communist" as a joke.
