OTRC: Kevin Smith's new movie 'Red State' to be protested at the Sundance festival premiere on Sunday

Kevin Smith's new horror movie "Red State" is premiering at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday January 23, 2011 and there are already protests planned for the occasion.

The film reportedly satirizes Christian fundamentalism, but the actual plot-points have been mostly kept secret. The infamous Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas has already begun planning their protests of the film, which they have said mocks "the servants of God."

Westboro church leaders have also attacked film festival founder Robert Redford for "enabling perverts at the Sundance Film Festival," Contact music has reported. Westboro Baptist Church gained notoriety after picketing the funerals of fallen homosexual soldiers. Smith has said that he is planning to stage his own protest, against the religious group.

Smith announced on Twitter that he intends to hold a public auction to sell the movie to a distributor during the Sundance screening, but refused to do any interviews or press junkets for the film.

"I'll just furnish all the information I'd normally serve up one at a time to a small, jaded audience," the filmmaker explained on the social networking website. "Nobody needs to talk to me anymore anyway, as anyone who's curious can always know what I'm thinking 24/7 right here on Twitter."

The film is one of the highlights of this year's festival, aided perhaps by the fact that there will only be two screenings, down from the usual four. The independent film stars recent Golden Globe-winner Melissa Leo, John Goodman, Michael Parks and Kevin Pollak.

The horror movie is a departure from Smith's usual comedy genre, but is a return to the filmmaker's writing, directing, editing position after only directing and editing his 2010 buddy cop movie, "Cop Out."
