California will work with the federal government to increase vehicle fuel efficiency. The state had been at odds with the federal government over national anti-pollution standards that California officials thought were too lenient.

On Monday, the state and the federal government announced they'll come up with shared standards for vehicles that will be built beginning in the 2017 model year.

It's still unclear what the new tougher standards will be. They won't be decided upon until this September.
