The city of Bell won't have to pay for the mayor's legal expenses in a lawsuit involving the city's salary scandal. The Los Angeles Times reported Superior Court Judge Joseph Kalin ruled Monday that Mayor Oscar Hernandez can't bill the city of Bell for defending himself against a lawsuit seeking to recover tax dollars.

Hernandez and two other officials facing criminal corruption charges argued the city should pay their legal costs because they're being sued in their official capacity. Judge Kalin said asking the city to cover Hernandez's legal bills would essentially be saying the mayor had proved his case.
