OTRC: Sarah Michelle Gellar may return to television in drama role

After almost eight years, former "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Sarah Michelle Gellar could make her return to the small screen in a new drama series for CBS called "The Ringer."

According to Entertainment Weekly Gellar will play a woman on the run who takes on the identity of her twin sister. The project is still in the early stages and the network has only ordered a pilot, so it is unknown if the show will be picked up as a full series.

Peter Traugott, the pilot's producer, revealed more details about Gellar's role to the magazine. "There's a point of view of two twin sisters who grew apart over a tragedy in their past. And one now seeks redemption and the other one seeks revenge. The sister who is seeking redemption has had a much more troubled life," He says.

Traugott says that Gellar "had started thinking about coming back to TV a couple of years ago and she really wanted it to be something in cable." He adds, "When CBS read this thing and flipped for it and loved Sarah for it, that kind of started her thinking about being more open-minded to doing network because of the subject matter and this piece that she was so excited about."

The actress will also get to play both sisters. The character named Bridget is the one who takes over Siobhan's life after she allegedly dies in a boating accident. Though audiences will get to see Gellar play Siobhan in flashbacks that Traugott compares to what is seen on the Glenn Close show "Damages."

As for what "Buffy" fans might think, the producer tells that magazine, "For the 'Buffy' fans, she wanted part of what she initiated. " He adds, "I know one thing she wanted to guard against was making sure that she whatever she does in TV, she does something that her fans who had grown up loving 'Buffy' will also be excited about. And we think this show has that quality to it."

Since "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" left the airwaves in 2003, Gellar has been woking in films with roles in "The Grudge" series, "Southland Tales" and voice work for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." The actress, who married Freddie Prinze Jr. in September 2001m gave birth to a daughter, Charlotte Prinze, in September 2009.
