Cheryl Burke of "Dancing with the Stars" is still bothered by tabloids calling her fat in July, 2008. The professional dancer lost her confidence when photos were published of her looking about 10 lbs. heavier, while on hiatus from the show.
"One night I was supposed to go out with my friends but I couldn't do it. Every time someone looked at me I was like, 'That person thinks I'm fat,'" the 26-year-old dancer told People magazine.
At the time the photos were published, Burke said, "You don't have to be anorexic to be beautiful." But now she has admit that she was devastated and tried everything to drop the weight, from starvation to diet pills.
But thanks to Burke's dancing schedule and a focus on eating healthy, she gradually dropped the weight, but left room for some splurges.
"I'm not going to deprive myself, but instead of eating potato chips I'll eat Triscuits or low-fat Cheez-Its," Burke said. "There are moments when I'm like, 'Ugh, the camera adds 10 lbs... but as long as I work up a sweat and eat clean, I'm okay. I feel great about my body."
Burke also recently spoke out about being molested as a child in her new book, "Dancing Lessons." Burke testified against the family friend after he was accused of going after other children. He was subsequently sent to prison for almost 20 years.
Burke has been dancing since she was 4 years old. She won two seasons of "Dancing With the Stars," ABC's hit ballroom dancing show, and her partners have included NFL player Chad Ochocinco, Las Vegas crooner Wayne Newton and actor and retired basketball player Rick Fox.
The 12th season of "Dancing With the Stars" is set to premiere in March. Its cast has not yet been announced.
