No more delays for new downtown LA jail

February 1, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
After being stalled over budget problems for the past year and a half, a new jail is set to open in downtown Los Angeles.

The $84 million Metropolitan Detention Center will replace the more than half century old and severely overcrowded jail next door at Parker Center.

Several councilmembers have expressed concerns that opening the jail would force the city's general services and personnel departments to take on nearly $1 million in unbudgeted expenses over the next five months.

The Los Angeles Police Department is picking up the costs.
