Singer Melissa Etheridge is getting ready to rock out on the Broadway stage in "American Idiot" and tells the Associated Press she is having "a blast."

"It's been crazy. Oh my God, it's so fun, though," she tells the wire service. "I'm having a blast. I'm so outside of my comfort zone and I'm like living out high school fantasies."

The Grammy and Oscar-winning singer-songwriter will star as drug dealer St. Jimmy in the hit Broadway musical based on Green Day's 2004 rock opera album, "American Idiot."

Green Day's lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, the composer and co-author of the musical, has been playing the role since Jan. 1, 2011. The 49-year-old singer takes over for Armstrong in eight shows that run Tuesday to Sunday. The Green Day lead singer returns to the show February 10 as part of a 50-show stint.

The musical follows three working-class characters as they to try find meaning in their lives. One joins the Army and is deployed to the Middle East, one becomes a father and struggles with domestic life, and one descends into a drug-fueled life in the city.

According to the Associated press, "St. Jimmy, a sort of charismatic dark angel originally written for a man."

Etheridge tells the wire service she was hesitant to take on the role. "When they called me, at first I was like, 'Aw, no. That's really nice, but no,'" she said. "Then I kind of sat with it for a couple of days and thought, 'This could be supercool and superfun.'"

She also says that learning the show's choreography was probably the hardest part: "I never had to use that part of my brain - singing and then moving at the same time with a lot of other people. If you mess up, you're gonna get trampled."

This new role comes following reports that Etheridge is reportedly dating Linda Wallem, creator of the series "Nurse Jackie," almost a year after she split from actress Tammy Etheridge.

Melissa Etheridge is reportedly dating Linda Wallem, creator of the series "Nurse Jackie," almost a year after she split from actress Tammy Etheridge.

The 49-year-old Grammy-winning rocker, known for hits such as "Come To My Window," and Wallem have not commented on the People magazine report, which said the two became involved romantically three months after her April 2010 breakup and have been best friends for more than a decade.

Following their split, Melissa and Tammy Etheridge engaged in a custody battle over their 4-year-old twins Johnnie Rose and Miller. Tammy Etheridge also sought financial support from her ex.

The two exchanged vows in a commitment ceremony in the beachside community of Malibu in Los Angeles, California in September 2003 and registered a domestic partnership in August 2005. Tammy Etheridge gave birth to the twins in 2006 through artificial insemination from an unnamed donor.

Melissa Etheridge also has a teenage daughter and pre-teen son born via a sperm donation from rocker David Crosby. Her ex-girlfriend, filmmaker Julie Cypher, has shared custody.
