2010 Hemet sexual assault suspect arrested

HEMET, Calif.

On March 3, 2010, Vargas allegedly assaulted an unidentified female at knifepoint in a vacant lot on the 28600 block of Yale St. in Hemet.

Riverside County Sheriff's deputies from the Hemet station received the report at 9:40 p.m.

The victim described her assailant as a male Hispanic in his early 20s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing about 210-220 pounds. A composite sketch was made and released.

Juan Vargas, who resided in the vicinity of the crime, was identified as a person of interest, but he fled his residence before authorities could interview him.

Biological evidence collected during the investigation was confirmed as matching Vargas by the Calif. Dept. of Justice.

Officers and investigators from the Riverside Sheriff's Dept., Federal Bureau of Investigation, Riverside County District Attorney's Office, Riverside Police Dept. and the San Bernardino Police Dept. arrested Vargas at a residence on the 40800 block of Stetson Ave. in Hemet Monday.

Vargas was held at the Southwest Detention Center on $1 million bail.
