On May 18, 2010, Los Angeles city firefighter Charles MacDougall said he was attacked at the Cecil Hotel while assisting someone in distress. He said he was upstairs in a hotel room while his partner was in a paramedic van.
Police searched for months for a suspect, but eventually uncovered inconsistencies in MacDougall's story.
Prosecutors dropped the case due to lack of evidence.
Both firefighters are on paid leave while the investigation continues.
