OC residents evacuate after gas pipe crash

LA HABRA, Calif.

The driver plowed into a gas meter on the 500 block of West Fourth Avenue at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday. A hissing sound could be heard coming from the rupture as natural gas gushed out.

Twenty families, a total of 70 people, were evacuated from the neighborhood and taken to a La Habra community center.

One woman and her two children were taken to the hospital after complaints of feeling dizzy and weak.

Crews dug into the street and pinched the pipeline to stop the flow, and the gas was shut off at around 1:30 a.m.

One resident is still without gas. Crews will be back later Friday to fix the meter.

Officials said the driver was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence.
