Mel Gibson's new film "The Beaver" is set to be released in May rather than in March.

The news comes weeks after it was reported that Gibson may be charged with domestic violence regarding a January 2010 confrontation with then-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of their baby daughter Lucia. No arrests have been made. The two broke up in April 2010.

In "The Beaver," Gibson plays a depressed father who uses a beaver hand puppet as his only way of communication. The film also stars Jodie Foster, who is the director, and Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence.

The release date of the film, produced by Summit Entertainment, was moved from March 28 to May 6, The Hollywood Reporter said. The postponement would allow more time to promote the movie and May is a high-profile month at the box office, it said.

Gibson has not commented about his recent legal troubles. He has said in court documents filed in June 2010 that he slapped Grigorieva during the confrontation at his Los Angeles home in a bid to protect their baby, who she was holding in her arms at the time.

The actor has denied her claims that he punched her in the face and harmed Lucia as they argued in front of her teenage son Sacha, whose father is actor Timothy Dalton.

Gibson made headlines last summer due to a recorded racist, sexist and explicit rant he is said to have made against Grigorieva. He has not confirmed it is his voice on the recordings, which were posted on the website RadarOnline.

Foster has defended Gibson, who also starred with her in the 1994 film "Maverick", after the recordings surfaced.

She also defended Gibson after a 2006 DUI tirade in which he hurled anti-Semitic and sexist comments at the arresting police officers. He later entered rehab for alcohol-related treatment and his conviction has since been expunged.
