The embattled city of Vernon is hiring a pair of $500-an-hour attorneys in hopes of keeping its cityhood.

The tiny industrial city south of Los Angeles is embroiled in a state ethics investigation.

Vernon will hire former state attorney general John Van de Kamp as well as attorney Robert M. Stern.

They'll have six months to complete their findings.

The Los Angeles City Council will consider annexing Vernon.

Vernon city and business leaders say that would cost jobs. The city has less than 100 residents.
