Police said they responded to a shooting call at 104th Street and Western Avenue at about 10:45 p.m. and found a dead man lying in the road. The victim has been identified as 31-year-old Herbert Seymour Jr.
Detectives said the victim is not a gang member. However, they say the suspect is possibly a gang member.
"This was totally senseless. My son never did nothing to nobody," said Herbert Seymour Sr., the victim's father. "He was just going to the liquor store and coming home."
Herbert Seymour Sr. says his son went to college, stayed away from trouble and worked hard to care for his two children. He says his son simply walked less than a block from their home to pick up a few things at the store when tragedy struck.
"Five minutes later, we heard three shots. And by the time I got to the sidewalk, I saw my son laying in the middle of the street. He did not deserve to die that way," said Herbert Seymour Sr.
"That's my dad. I will always think about him. I will always pray. I just want him to me grow up with my brothers," said Christian Seymour.
Police do not have a motive or any suspects in the shooting. More than a dozen of Herbert Jr.'s co-workers from Best Buy in Hawthorne visited his South L.A. home Thursday to be with the victim's family.
"He was like a brother and family member to all of us at the Geek Squad," said co-worker Scott Crichiton.
"This house would be filled with 200 people easily if we could close the store instantly because that was the kind of person Herb was," said store manager Victoria Dias.
