Letters could soon be sent out to thousands of Los Angeles Unified School District teachers warning them that they could be laid off.

The school board is considering a proposal that would send the letters to more than 4,000 teachers by March.

If their jobs are eliminated, they would receive a second letter in June.

The district is facing a $400 million budget gap and is considering the layoffs as a worst-case scenario to bridge that gap.
