An early USGS report stated the quake hit at approximately 9:30 a.m. about five miles southeast of Valle Vista, nine miles east southeast of Hemet and 18 miles west southwest of Palm Springs.
The depth of the earthquake was estimated to be about 11 miles.
There were no reports of damage or injuries.
Shaking was also reported Carlsbad, Temecula, Riverside, and Coachella elsewhere in western Riverside and northern San Diego counties.
