"Glee" might have some small screen competition soon. Katharine McPhee, the "American Idol" fifth season runner-up, has signed on to co-star in a new musical television pilot called "Smash" for NBC, according to Deadline.com.
The pilot is based off an idea by Steven Spielberg and developed by DreamWorks TV and Universal Media Studios. The show will be a drama about character who work together to develop a Broadway musical inspired by Marilyn Monroe. "Will & Grace" star Debra Messing has also been cast on the show.
However, unlike "Glee," which features popular chart topping songs resung by the cast, the show will feature original songs penned by Tony Award-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Jack Davenport has also been cast as a choreographer while Messing will play a lyricist. McPhee has been cast as a beautiful struggling actress who will do anything to land the lead role of Marilyn.
