OTRC: Esperanza Spalding incurs wrath of Justin Bieber fans

Esperanza Spalding has drawn the wrath of Justin Bieber fans after beating him to win the Grammy for Best New Artist.

After the 26-year-old jazz singer and bassist's name was announced on Sunday night, supporters of Bieber, a 16-year-old pop star with a loyal and mostly young female fan base, unleashed a slew of profanity-laced Twitter messages, some containing death threats.

"I'm going to murder Esperanza Spalding," Twitter user LaurenSBelieber wrote.

"WATCH OUT ESPERANZA SPALDING ..." Twitter user ItsLuisaBieber wrote. "BE CAREFUL CUS MORE THAN 7 MILLION GIRLS OUTHERE WANT TO KILL YOU, INCLUDING ME."

Also, Spalding's Wikipedia page was vandalized with false facts following her win. The online encyclopedia is mostly written and edited by the public.

"SHE IS (expletive) REATARD THAT NO ONE HAS HEARD OF SO (expletive) PLEASE DIE !" one message read, while another simply said: "VIVA LA JUSTIN BIEBER!"

Another revision read: She now has the 2011 Grammy for being the Best new Artist!. Even though no one has ever heard of her! Yay!"

Spalding's middle name was also falsely listed as "Quesadilla."

One user fired back, writing: "Bieber fans have recently hacked this page because they have nothing better to do with their lives."

Bieber and Spalding have not commented on the matter but met for the first time while giving a video interview to the Associated Press (see below).

Bieber said on his Twitter page: "Of course I wanted to win. Its been & still is a dream to win a grammy. Was I upset...yes. But I was happy for her also. Someone said to me tonight its not your successes that define u but your failures. I lost..but I don't plan on this being my last chance."

"I do this because I love it," he added. "And I do it for my family friends and fans who support me. I was grateful for the honor and this is just the beginning.

Spalding said on her website that Bieber and the other nominees for Best New Artist - Drake, Florence + The Machine and Mumford & Sons - were all "outstanding musicians and a great testament to the diversity of music," adding: "I certainly did not expect to even be considered for that type of nomination. Me being a little old jazz musician and everything."
