OTRC: Anna Nicole Smith opera has 'sex, extreme language and drug abuse'

An opera based on the life of late Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith is set to open at the London Opera House on Thursday, February 17, and features "sex, extreme language and drug abuse."

Smith, who was also a reality star, died in 2007 at age 39 following an accidental overdose. The music of the opera, called "Anna Nicole: The Party Always Ends," is by composer Mark-Anthony Turnage. The librettist is Richard Thomas, who penned the show "Jerry Springer: the Opera."

"Sex, extreme language and drug abuse are part of the opera - after all, they were ingredients in a life that went from the dubious glamour of the sex symbol, through long and vicious legal struggles to a fatal overdose," the show's website states. "How Anna Nicole was treated and how she was viewed is as much a reflection of the society that hounded her as of her own feelings and ambitions."

Dutch soprano singer Eva-Maria Westbroek, 40, plays the title character. Alan Oke, a tenor from the UK, portrays "Old Man Marshall," based on Smith's billionaire oil tycoon husband J. Howard Marshall, who died at age 90 in 1995, a year after she married him at age 26.

Other characters who appear in the opera are the Lawyer Stern, based on Smith's boyfriend-lawyer Howard K. Stern. In January, a judge dismissed his drug conspiracy convictions regarding a case about Smith's medication prescriptions.

"Eva-Maria Westbroek creates what is a challenging and complex central role," the website adds. "This new opera is provocative in its themes, exciting in its bravura style and thrilling with its sheer contemporary nerve. Anna Nicole Smith's life made the news - you can bet this world premiere will too."

Tickets for "Anna Nicole: The Party Always Ends" retail from 4 pounds sterling ($6.4) to 75 pounds sterling ($120) and performances run from February 17 to March 4.
