Ex-principal sentenced for molesting students

COMPTON, Calif.

Jonas Vital Silverio, 41, was sentenced to eight years in prison and was also ordered to register as a /*sex offender*/ upon his release.

Silverio, who was a former teacher and coach at Lynwood High School before going to Firebaugh High School in Compton, pleaded no contest last June to 10 counts of lewd acts on a child 14 or 15 years old.

Three of the four victims played on various volleyball teams he coached. The molestations occurred between 1996 and 2007, said Deputy District Attorney Stephanie Chavez.

Silverio resigned as principal of Firebaugh just before leaving for the Philippines in May 2009. He was arrested at LAX when he returned in July that same year.
