The hit-and-run happened around 10 p.m. Sunday on the 5000 block of West Flight Avenue.
Officials said the man noticed a suspicious vehicle outside his home so he went to check things out.
That's when the driver made a u-turn, hit the man and tried to run over someone else.
The victim was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center with significant injuries.
Witnesses said the suspect was driving a dark blue or black two-tone Honda Civic hatchback and had several passengers.
