When Ricky Gervais wrote a sample Academy Awards opening for Anne Hathaway and James Franco, he says he "did it for a laugh on my blog," never intending for people to actually thing Hathaway and Franco were supposed to use it.
Yet, in a recent interview with E! News, Franco didn't take too kindly to Gervais' joke gesture.
"He did his award show and he bombed. Why is he trying to get in on ours," Franco tells the reporter before reading a few lines with a smirk. "Horrible. His lines weren't good on the Golden Globes. Why does he want to do our lines?"
Gervais had a controversial run as host of the 2011 Golden Globes that spurred outcry by some of Hollywood's biggest stars after quips on Robert Downey Jr. and Tim Allen did not go over too well with the Hollywood crowd.
When asked in a recent interview if they'll take any humor from Gervais' turn at the Globes, Anne Hathaway said, "I can guarantee that if you're looking for someone to call people out, we're not your hosts." She added, "I think that humor is really difficult to pull off, and I'm not particularly adept at it. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it."
"I don't mean to sound overly serious, but I am the youngest host in history and I have no business being cynical or calling anyone out. I certainly haven't earned the right to do that," the actress said.
After reading through some more of Gervais' jokes toward the end of the interview, Franco does laugh at a few of the comedians lines and says, "I'll use some of these lines. Thanks, Ricky."
