Justin Guarini, who came in second on the first season of "American Idol" in 2002, has joined the cast of the Broadway musical "American Idiot," which is based on the songs of rock band Green Day.

Last year, the 32-year-old Georgia native, known for his wild, curly hair, made his Broadway debut last year in the musical "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown." He will take over the role of Will in "American Idiot" at the St. James Theatre in New York starting on Tuesday.

"Justin blew us away in his audition and I am thrilled to have him join the company of 'American Idiot,'" director Michael Mayer said in a statement.

Guarini lost to Kelly Clarkson on FOX's hit singing contest show. They later starred together in the 2003 movie "From Justin to Kelly." After his run on "American Idol," Guarini released two albums and worked as a guest host for the TV Guide Network.

Clarkson has won two Grammy Awards and has released four albums. The singer, known for hits such as "Breakaway" and "My Life Would Suck Without You," is considered the most successful "American Idol" alum of all time.

Others who have competed on the reality show have also appeared in Broadway productions. Ace Young, who appeared on the fifth season, and Diana DeGarmo, who came in second on the third season, appeared together in "Hair." Josh Strickland, who appeared on season two, starred in the Disney musical "Tarzan."
